Les Borjs de la Kasbah wins ‘Travellers’ Choice’ Award

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

For the third time in as many years, les Borjs de la Kasbah, the 4 star boutique hotel in Marrakech close to the royal palace, has received a “Travellers’ Choice Award” from Trip Advisor based on the reviews of its visitors.

From a report issued in February 2012, Les Borjs (BK) appeared in a listing of the best 25 hotels in Africa and was also rated 4th best in Morocco.

Said co-owner Mike Bruce-Mitford: “Although we are proud of our ‘hotel de charme’, created from a series of old buildings between 2004 and 2007, it is very rewarding to know that our efforts are appreciated by so many of our visitors. However, the Travellers’ Choice award is essentially a further tribute to our wonderful staff, most of whom have been with us since the hotel opened fully in 2007.”

This 2012 award from Trip Advisor broadly confirms the results of previous surveys in which les Borjs de la Kasbah appeared among the top 10 hotels in Africa and top 5 in Morocco and reflects similar findings in recent years by the online booking site, Expedia, as well as feedback contained in many hundreds of the hotel’s own customer questionnaires.

5 Reasons to stay at Les Borjs de la Kasbah

Monday, July 11th, 2011

When it comes to choosing accommodation in Marrakech there is no shortage of large international hotels for package tourist and business customers and there is no lack, either, of riads of all kinds, the vast majority of them unregulated and run by non-professionals.

However, Les Borjs de la Kasbah, with its eighteen rooms,  is one of a small number of boutique hotels in Marrakech to offer an intimate and exclusive atmosphere in addition to a full range of services of the highest standard.

Opened in 2006 after a three year building and restoration project, this friendly, luxury hotel is a haven of peace and tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle for which Marrakech is so famous. Here are some reasons for staying with us:

1)     Location: just yards from the Royal Palace, Les Borjs de la Kasbah stands in the heart of the fortified Kasbah, in the most southerly part of the old city, an entertaining walk from the central Jemaa el Fna square but far enough away from its hurly burly atmosphere to be delightfully peaceful by comparison.

2)     The Pool: a secluded leisure area houses the 5m x 10m heated pool with its sun terrace and poolside bar. After a day busy shopping and sightseeing in Marrakech you can unwind in this remarkable haven of tranquillity sipping a mint tea or iced drink – you can take a light lunch here too.

3)     The Restaurant:  modern French cuisine and traditional Moroccan dishes can be enjoyed at the hotel’s much-praised Le Jasmin restaurant. Two à la carte menus are available, including such gastronomic delights as ‘Medallions of Beef with cabbage pastilla, vegetables and foie gras jus’ and ‘Tagine kefta (minced lamb meatballs) with quails’ eggs’. You may even enjoy the food so much that you’ll be tempted to enrol on one of the hotel’s cookery courses

4)     The Spa : our spa, L’Arganier, includes an impressive marble-clad, domed hammam and separate sauna as well as two treatment rooms and a rest area. It is here that you can completely relax and recover from the stresses of modern living. After a steam bath and invigorating scrub down a gentle massage is the perfect way to relieve muscular tension in the back, neck and shoulders administered by a trained therapist. A foot massage after a shopping expedition is pure bliss!

5)     Special Offers : les Borjs de la Kasbah regularly promotes special offers. For instance, from now up until 3rd September 2011 you can stay four nights and pay for only three, saving 25%, or book seven nights and pay for only five, saving even more. This offer also applies to those on half board who may dine from the daily table d’hote menu for free on the fourth night.

New Menu – French Cuisine and Moroccan Flavours

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Since the day it opened in 2007, Le Jasmin, the restaurant of Les Borjs de la Kasbah, has taken pride in the quality of its cuisine.

However, following employment earlier this year of a top consultant chef from France, gourmet visitors to Les Borjs de la Kasbah will now be treated to an even more memorable dining experience thanks to a new menu featuring French cuisine with distinctive Moroccan overtones, as well as a separate selection of classic local dishes.

In February we invited Olivier Pichot, former head chef at the Trianon, Paris (where he obtained 2 Michelin stars before handing over the reins to a certain Gordon Ramsay), to have a look at every aspect of catering at Les Borjs de la Kasbah and to make recommendations.

Over a three month period the entire restaurant operation was assessed and a programme of additional training implemented including, not least, the techniques required to produce and serve a number of exciting new dishes, both French and Moroccan.

Salad of gambas prawns

The main aim behind the review of dining at Les Borjs was not only to raise the bar a little by presenting a number of new, light and refined dishes, including certain French classics, but to imbue them with the unmistakeable influences of Moroccan herbs and spices.

In addition to the daily-changing table d’hote menu (200 dh) a tempting selection of French and international à la carte dishes is available, including vegetarian options, with traditional local specialities being featured in a separate Moroccan menu. A  lexicon of  Moroccan culinary terms is included with each menu.

An important point to make is that dinner menus are cooked to order using, to the maximum extent possible, fresh produce, sourced locally. A few examples of dishes from our current menu are featured below.

* Smoked Atlas trout with fresh ewe’s cheese, beet coulis and fresh herb salad with pesto and homemade gressini

* Salad of gambas prawns Riviera with small cubes of grilled umbrine, chermoula, green asparagus, citrus fruit and fresh mixed lettuce with a citrus emulsion

* Scorpion fish (rascasse) in a spicy chermoula and shellfish coulis, pan fried artichoke barigoule style and grenaille potatoes

* Slow-cooked noisettes of lamb with figs and dates, reduced tagine stock with cinnamon, pumpkin chutney, puréed carrot with chermoula

* Papillote of market vegetables in chermoula perfumed with ginger and fresh beldi lemon, served with rose water flavoured rice

Soft centred Moelleux de Chocolat with light egg custard, shibah style
* Chilled strawberry gazpacho with basil and a citrus sorbet

Royal Visits to Marrakech

Not only is Marrakech a popular destination for growing numbers of tourists from many European as well as other nations, including celebrities from all walks of life, the city also receives more than its fair share of attention from several royal houses.

King Mohammed VI is, of course, a regular visitor to the pink city, one of his favourite locations, indeed he has recently announced that a number of cabinet meetings will in future be held there.

Furthermore,  a number of other royal personalities have spent time in Marrakech this year, including Britain’s Prince Charles with his wife Camilla, who visited in March, and King Carlos of Spain who was there in May.

2nd Expedia endorsement for Les Borjs de la Kasbah

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

With a significant percentage of the Les Borjs’ bookings coming via Expedia, it was interesting to note the results of the online travel company’s 2010 ‘Insiders’ Select’ survey into standards at its 114,000 hotels around the world.
After a stellar performance in 2009 when, to our great surprise, we found ourselves propelled into a remarkable 20th place overall, the highest ranked hotel not only in Morocco but in Africa, this year we appear, at first glance, to have come down to earth with a bit of a bump. However, on closer examination, these most recent results offer more than a few crumbs of comfort for, despite the hotel slipping down the rankings to 497th out of 2,525 hotels and guest houses listed in the first division of Expedia’s many thousands of hotels worldwide, BK’s rating in the overall classification this year makes it the highest ranked of all Marrakech hotels and the second highest in Morocco, with a rating of 97.8%, according to Expedia’s rating methodology, based on Traveller Opinions, Value for Money and Expedia’s own Expert Assessment.
Commenting on the 2010 ‘Insiders’ Select’ results, BK co-founder, Mike Bruce-Mitford, said

Marrakech Marathon 2011

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, the 22nd running of the Marrakesh marathon, one of Morocco’s major sporting events with an expected entry of 5,000 competitors from around the world, especially Europe, takes place on 30th January 2011 in the ideal 20+ degree temperatures of the Moroccan winter. One of the leading producers of world-class distance runners, Morocco is proud of its many champions and you’ll have the chance to see the best of the current elite squad if you join the crowds lining the picturesque course around the town.

Considered to be one of the fastest in the world, the flat circuit follows the ancient city walls, continuing along the elegant boulevards of the residential Hivernage and commercial Géliz districts en route to La Palmeraie, with its golf course, palm groves and smart villas, before returning to town.

Like Morocco’s famous ‘Marathon des Sables’, held in the Sahara each April, the Marrakech Marathon is open to all comers on production of a medical certificate. Les Borjs de la Kasbah, a mere 10 minute jog from the start of the race, is a perfect place to stay, not least for the benefit of its swimming pool and spa where, after the event, soothing massages can be applied to aching limbs!

Les Borjs de la Kasbah – No 1 in Africa

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Les Borjs de la Kasbah, Marrakech, has been recognised for its high levels of customer satisfaction in a worldwide survey conducted by Expedia.com, the online hotel and travel booking company.

Expedia’s Insiders’ Select is a ranking of the best hotels in the world based largely on reviews posted by customers on Expedia/hotels.com and its affiliate websites. In addition to end-user reviews, perceived value for money is taken into consideration in drawing up the rankings, as are the opinions of Expedia’s own area managers on the ground. The Insiders’ Select rankings for 2009, which feature the best performing hotels from Expedia’s vast 80,000 worldwide portfolio, show Les Borjs de la Kasbah at number 22 out of the top 1000 hotels worldwide and a remarkable Number 1 on the continent of Africa.
