The Marrakech International Marathon

Marrakech International Marathon 2016, in January, is one of the world’s most prestigious and an important tourist attraction. Hosted in Marrakech under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, this year’s race, the 26th edition of the event, is preceded on the 30th by a ‘Welcome Race’ and the ‘Kids’ Race’ at 10:00 and 10:30 respectively (from the Marathon Village). 

 Main Races

The starting point for the two main events, the half marathon and marathon itself, is on Menara Avenue on the 31st January at 08:00 and 09:30 respectively.

The Circuit

Predominantly flat (with some modest inclines in the Palmeraie district) and thus one of the fastest, the IAAF-approved circuit covers the regulation 42.2 km (marathon) and 21.1km (half marathon) taking participants and spectators along city ramparts and some of the most attractive parts of the city’s residential areas, through the Menara and Agdal Gardens, past ancient monuments s well as olive and orange groves.

Refreshments, Timing and Security

Water, orange slices and sponges will be available at regular 5km intervals and timings are posted regularly along the course.


Time limits for completing the courses are 3 hours for the half marathon and 5 hours for the main event. The course record for men, set by Stephen Tum Kipkemei from Kenya in 2013, is 2:06:35, while the women’s record is 2:29:21 (Adriana Barbu, Romania, 1994). Last year’s top three male athletes were:

  1. Tiruneh Workneh Tesfa  from Ethiopia in 2:08:51
  2. Mzaniki Sauel Theuri from Kenya in 2:08:56
  3. Sitkovsky Oleksandr from the Ukraine in 2:09:11

The top three female runners in 2015 were:

  1. Wolkenech Edesa from Ethiopia in 2:31:06
  2. Valary Aiyabei from Kenya in 2:31:57
  3. Saeda Kedir Adilo from Ethiopia in 2:32:13

Registering for the Marathon

Registration for participants by mail or online is open until midnight on Monday, 25/01/2016. All runners must collect their bib numbers from Dar Talib (Daoudiate Unit 4) or the Marathon Village (Place du 16 Novembre) during the two days before the race.
