Springtime is the ideal time of year to visit Marrakech when temperatures average an idyllic 26° with more than 8 sunshine hours per day and just the occasional light shower to keep vegetation fresh before the heat of summer.
As the air fills with the intoxicating scent of flowers in bloom throughout the city, the streets buzz with the excitement of things to come as visitors arrive to experience some of the popular events taking place during March and April.
International Magic Festival
From the 19-22nd March, the squares and streets of Marrakech, as well as the Royal Theatre, will be taken over by street and stage performers participating in the International Magic Festival.
Following on from the magic is the demanding reality of the Transmarocaine Challenge (22-30 March). This year’s running, walking, canoeing and mountain biking challenge, the ninth in the series, will take participants (and spectators) from Essaouira, a pretty coastal town on the Atlantic coast, 150 km west of Marrakech, to Tahanaoute, situated at the foot of the mighty Atlas, in the shadow of Mont Toubkal (4167m), and finally on to Marrakech itself.
Auto GP World Series 2014
For many, the most notable event taking place in Marrakech during April is the first round of the 5th Auto GP World Series, scheduled to take place at Circuit Moulay el Hassan over the weekend of 12-13 April. A possible 11 teams from Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and the UK will battle it out on the city’s 2.9 mile (4.6 km) street circuit.
On the 15th of April, visitors will be able to witness a total lunar eclipse.
From 23-26 April the 4th Marrakech Air Show is a civil and military event designed to recognise Morocco’s place in the African aerospace industry. The first three days are for trade attendees only while the final day is open to the general public.
Printemps Musical des Alizés, Essaouira
Starting 24th April, in the coastal town of Essaouira 150 km west of Marrakech, this is a noted festival of chamber music. The event takes place on the Dar Souir square, close to the Bab Marrakech. Essaouira is served by the efficient Supratours scheduled coach from Marrakech, the trip taking just over two and a half hours.
Marrakech Atlas Etape
Sunday 27th April is the date for this year’s Marrakech Atlas Etape, an annual non-competitive fun bike ride for charity. Starting in Marrakech, the ride’s two routes (respectively 60 and 140 km long) head out into the countryside and take a loop through the Atlas Mountains before returning to the city.
