Top 5 Romantic Things for couples to do and see in Marrakech

Marrakech offers a wide variety of things for couples to do and see in Marrakech. Here are some of them…

#1 – Take a Stroll in an Exotic Garden

The best-known garden in Marrakech is the Jardin Majorelle, created by the eponymous French painter during the first few decades of the twentieth century and acquired after his death by the couturier, Yves Saint Laurent, who eventually bequeathed it to the city. The garden, a haven for a variety of birdlife covering some 2½ acres, is notable for its displays of cacti, bamboo and exotic plants while water features, in the form of running streams and ponds, are enhanced by water lilies and lotus flowers. A small Moorish building, formerly the artist’s studio, painted in vivid primary colours, now serves as a Berber museum.

Jardin Majorelle may be the city’s longest-established garden open to the public but it now has a major rival in the shape of Le Jardin Secret. Located just north of Place Jemaa el Fna, amid the narrow, labyrinthine lanes and alleys of the famous souks, this newly-created oasis of tranquillity originates from the Saadian dynasty of the late 16th century.

Today, Le Jardin Secret boasts two distinctive, beautifully recreated gardens - an exotic version and an Islamic one – along with a small museum with fascinating audio-visual presentations on the history of the site and its former palaces and a documentary film describing how the project came about. A small bar and separate roof-terrace cafeteria are lovely spots in which to relax, absorbing the atmosphere of this, the most recent and perhaps most enchanting of the city’s visitor attractions.

#2 – Watch the Sun Setting over Koutoubia Mosque

Watching the sun set over Koutoubia Mosque is among the most romantic of experiences in Marrakech. The city’s largest mosque, this exceptional edifice is splendid to behold in brilliant morning sunshine and even more impressive each evening when its landmark minaret reflects the changing colours of the skyscape from varying shades of blue to a riot of pink, orange and red as the sun disappears behind the mountain peaks of the westerly High Atlas.

#3 – Explore the City by Calèche

Discover the city sights from the comfort of a calèche, one of the city’s traditional horse-drawn carriages. Relax together as you proceed gently through the streets and boulevards of Marrakech for an exceptionally romantic outing. Calèches can be found at several centrally located ranks in town but staff at your hotel will be happy to assist with booking one to collect you from your door.

#4 – A Bird’s Eye View

If you’re looking for something a little different, a thrilling hot air balloon ride is not only an incredibly romantic experience but an opportunity to enjoy an aerial perspective on Marrakech, its surrounding countryside and the stunning beauty of the High Atlas. Again, hotel staff will be happy to help organise your trip.

#5 – Shopping in the Medina

Instantly inspiring a sense of the history and ancient culture of Morocco, the legendary Medina of Marrakech is a magical place to explore, an endless market where you can shop for all kinds of souvenirs from leather goods to carpets, metalwork to pottery, Argan oil to spices; here, too, you can savour the heady aromas of saffron, ginger, cumin and many other spices and try your hand at the art of haggling like a local.

#6 – Experience the Jemaa el Fna’s Lively Atmosphere

Reverberating to the sound of constant drumming during the day, the Jemaa el Fna, the Ochre City’s iconic main square, really comes alive at night when the place is humming with the sights and sounds of street dancers and musicians, snake charmers, acrobats and jugglers, among other street entertainers. You can even opt to have matching henna tattoos painted on your hands (and even feet) courtesy of one of the tattoo artists present on the square at most times of day.
