Top Marrakech Events in January

The year’s festivities kick off on 11th January with the anniversary of Morocco’s Independence Manifesto. This is a national holiday commemorating the day in 1944 when France was presented by Morocco’s Independence Party with a manifesto demanding full independence for the kingdom from its colonial power.

While the manifesto was initially dismissed (full Moroccan independence was not achieved until 1957) this proclamation of independence became an enduring symbol of the country’s nationalist struggle. Today, cities across Morocco celebrate the independence manifesto with public festivities and street decorations.

Those interested in learning about traditional Berber culture should not miss Yennayer, the Berber New Year (12th to 15th January) when the Amazigh Berbers mark the first day of the Amazigh people’s agrarian calendar which has been in use for nearly 3000 years. As Yennayer is a national Berber holiday celebrations are limited mainly to villages and towns around Agadir and Essaouira where the Berber peoples have traditionally lived.

Involving street and dinner parties with participants feasting on chicken and couscous dishes, plenty of music, traditional sports and, in some areas, horse parades, Yennayer is a must-see opportunity to learn more about Berber customs and culture.

The 12th of January also sees the return of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship (13 races in 12 cities on 5 continents) to the customised, 3 km long Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan, just out of town but close to the centuries-old city walls, all the more impressive for its backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas. With all the fun of the fair, including a karting circuit and amusement arcades for the public, the event offers visitors a great chance to experience some thrilling motor racing action. As the publicity blurb says: "electric racing - this is the future!"

Another not-to-be-missed event is the Marrakech International Marathon on the 27th January. Attended by over 8,500 runners from around the globe, the Marrakech marathon is considered one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the world. One of the quickest among the world’s marathon circuits, the course follows a route along the 12th century ramparts of the city and leafy boulevards of the select Hivernage district lined by palm, olive and orange trees and through the lovely Menara Gardens.
