April Weather
As spring explodes in a riot of colourful blooms, bougainvillea, roses and hibiscus being among the most prominent, Marrakech enjoys average temperatures in the mid-twenties centigrade with around 10 hours of daily sunshine and very little risk of heavy rain.
Top Marrakech Events in April 2019
One of the most eagerly anticipated events this month is the International Nomad Festival. Scheduled to take place at M'hamid El Ghizlane, on the edge of the Sahara, between the 4th and 6th April, this outstanding outdoor event provides a fascinating opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture of the region’s nomadic peoples.
In addition to art and craft exhibitions, the programme also includes music, song and dance and on-stage performances of both poetry and storytelling by local and international artists, as well as unusual sporting events such as the the “ellaz” camel race and games of nomadic hockey!
April is also the month of the renowned Marathon des Sables which, once again, will attract athletes from around the world bent on pushing themselves to the limit. As usual, competitors will face this challenging 6-stage, 250-km foot race across the Sahara whilst carrying backpacks containing everything they’re likely to need, including food, first aid kits and bivouac equipment. One athlete whom spectators will be looking out for is the Moroccan ultramarathon champion, Lahcen Ahansa, who has already won this gruelling race an astonishing 10 times.
Those interested in motorsport should schedule their Moroccan visit to coincide with Marrakech’s World Touring Car Race (5th- 7th April) and/or the Grand Prix Hassan II (9th - 15th April).
Finally, news on the grapevine is that the 2-day so-called ‘Mad Jazz Festival’ with its unique fusions of traditional Moroccan music and modern and classic jazz styles will take place either sometime this month or early in May. Unfortunately, exact dates could not be confirmed at time of writing, so we encourage music fans to keep an eye on the festival’s official Website.
