Shopping in Marrakech
The hotel's kasbah location being, largely, a residential area, there are few shops locally, other than a variety of small general grocery stores, markets, craft workshops and, not least, a couple of major showrooms of Moroccan artworks and tourist souvenirs. However, a walk down the principal thoroughfare, the Rue de la Kasbah, brings one after 15 minutes or so to the centre of Marrakech and the noisy, colourful animation of its unique central square, Place Jemaa el Fna, where shopping in Marrakech really becomes well worth the experience.
Around and beyond the square lies one of Marrakech’s main attractions, the huge labyrinthine network of narrow lanes, squares and passages comprising the city's main souk where you can find pretty much anything. Most prominent among the hundreds of shops and workshops are those specialising in spices and exotic fruits, hand-beaten metal ware and wood-turned ornaments, pottery and leather goods, carpets and jewellery.
Shops of a more sophisticated nature, including fashion outlets, art galleries, high tech retailers and many of the best restaurants and bars in Marrakech, are to be found in Guéliz, the modern, commercial district of town (built by the French), a ten minute taxi ride away.
