More October Events in Marrakech

As the Ochre City’s exciting events calendar is continually being added to, here are a couple more October events in Marrakech you may wish to add to your programme if you're visiting this month…

Festival of Soufi Music & Dance

Scheduled to run from  24th to 28th October, the Festival of Soufi Music & Dance is a must for anyone interested in different cultural traditions, not only Moroccan. The Sufis’ devotional music is inspired by the works of Rumi, Hafiz and Bulleh Shah, Khwaja Ghulam Farid, Amir Khusrow and other Sufi poets. While some Sufi orders, taking an approach closer to more puritan forms of Islam, have declared music to be alien to Sufi tradition, many Sufis from as far afield as Afghanistan, Indonesia and Morocco itself, have made music a central element of their practices.

Most commonly found within South Asia’s Sufi culture, Qawwali is probably the most widely-known musical form of Sufi music and one which is central to the Sema ceremony of the whirling dervishes’ set to a musical style known as Ayin, vocal & instrumental pieces featuring classical Turkish instruments like the ney, a type of reed flute. West Africa’s Gnawa is also a form of Sufi music and Sufi love songs, which employ a repertoire of Sufi poems, are frequently performed as kafi (a solo genre featuring the harmonium and percussion) and ghazals (poetic expressions of the beauty of love and pain of separation).

Marrakech Air Show

Taking place at the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s military base in Marrakech from 24th to 27th October 2018, the Marrakech Air Show is another event well worth attending. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, this show is now well-established as THE meeting space in Africa for the aerospace industry – both military and civil. Featuring some 300 exhibitors, this major event will also be attended by over 100 official international military and civil delegations.

Relax at Les Borjs de la Kasbah

Whether you choose to attend one or both events, chances are you will appreciate the opportunity to enjoy some relaxation at the end of the da in peaceful surroundings – and there’s no better place to get both than at Les Borjs de la Kasbah, on the southern edge of the Marrakech medina. Why not book a stay with us right now?!
