Events in and Around Marrakech in February 2020
This month sees two extremely popular traditional festivals. The first is the Almond Blossom Festival staged in Tafraoute, a village to the south-west of Marrakech. Celebrating the coming of spring, this is a particularly fascinating and lively event involving, as it does, the availability of traditional culinary specialities as well as musical and other activities.
Offering a rewarding glimpse into vital aspects of local culture, this festival is a real treat for visitors. However, the window of opportunity to enjoy it is narrow as the festival begins only when the almond trees burst into blossom and ends before they fade. It is therefore advisable to check on arrival in Marrakech the precise dates of the event.
The second, equally popular traditional festival, is the annual Dakka Marrakchia, which combines religious and historical tradition with regional music. Designed to ensure the continuing survival of cultural tradition, the event also includes workshops, exhibitions and lectures with the aim of educating young visitors, in particular, about the diversity and richness of Morocco’s folklore and history.
N. B. As explained above, it is not possible to determine a precise date for this event at time of writing but local hotels/tourist offices should be able to provide more detailed information closer to the time.
Other major events this month include the 4LTrophy Rally (19th to 28th), a charitable ‘Biarritz to Marrakech’ rallye attracting several thousand students from 1500 universities bringing furniture and sports equipment for the charity “Enfants du Desert”, the 1-54 Marrakech (Contemporary African Art Fair) at the Mamounia on 22nd/23rd February, a showcase for the work, in a variety of mediums, of scores of artists from a dozen or more countries, and, not least, the Marrakech E-Prix 2020 on the 29th, the race for electrically powered racing cars now a well-established event in the Marrakech sporting calendar.
Things to Do in Marrakech in February
Mild, sunny and dry, at least by European standards, February is a good month to visit the Ochre City and to discover its many treasures including, for instance, the magnificent 12th century Koutoubia Mosque with its imposing 230 ft (70 m) high minaret, one of the city’s signature architectural features, the stately Bab Agnaou gate, one of the main features of the city’s impressive defensive walls with its ornate inscriptions of passages from the Quran.
